I only get the prohibited overlay and error on random channels. On Rogers Cable (analog coax-in) in the GTA.

Does this occur on Live TV, recorded TV or both?

Only Live TV

Does this happen on premium channels, non-premium channels or both?

Any random channel (high or low channel number)

Do you use Windows Media Center on an extender?

No

If you've done a clean install, did this correct the issue?
Did it return?
If the behavior returned, roughly how long?

Haven't tried a clean install.

Can you provide information on configuration
Number of TV tuners installed
Make and models of TV tuners

1 Tuner: ASUS EHC3-150 with latest driver. PCI-e interface

Signal configuration per tuner (i.e., over the air connected directly to [make and model] tuner)

Analog coax input with RG6 cables, my provider is Rogers Cable.

Do you use a Set Top Box?
If so, is the Set Top Box for cable, satellite or digital/analog coversion?
What is the connection method between the Set Top Box and the tuner (i.e., s-video)?

No

Other notes: This issue started when I got this card (EHC3-150), my old tuner works ok (ATI TV wonder 650 pci). After errors appear, I can still record the "prohibited" broadcast if I manually hit record on that channel. I also get an error "There was no TV Signal when the show was scheduled to record" occasionally, but if I fire up WMC the channel will appear fine. I have a strong cable signal, no noise and good picture quality.

Re: Help with Protected WTV Files

John,

I'm new to the forum and have just built my first HTPC with the Ceton tuner. I have a question regarding your comment:

"At least with Media Center, all those programs will play on extenders, but you cannot edit them."

Can you confirm this to be true? Right now, I cannot access much of our recorded content from another Win7 PC (we use Comcast in CT) but will only make the plunge for the new 360 (as an extender) if I can watch any and all recorded content from it.

To rephrase, can I watch DRM protected, recorded TV programs on an Media Center Extender when the protected content was recorded from a DIFFERENT Media Center PC.

Thanks,

Rob

Seemed straightforward. Settings>TV >set up TV signal>select region (US)>enter zip code ....... downloading TV information (okay, so far so good) > "Windows Media Center is examining your TV Signals" .... this is where the headaches begin. It will start to examine and sometimes make it halfway (usually not that far)... 9 times out of 10 it stalls here and just hangs endlessly. If I try and cancel, the program stops responding and I am forced to close via task manager. One time it actually made it all the way through this scanning process and then scanned through all channels. At this point it showed some options (channel 2, channel 3, composite 1, 2, etc.) and a signal actually showed up! I thought I had finally made it through this, but then it said something about an IR receiver not being detected and would not let me advance. I hit 'back' to try and scroll through some options, but nothing worked and even though I could watch the preview of my TV signal, it would not complete the process.

So, do I need an IR receiver? and is there a trick to the "examining signals" process that I don't know about?

I tested using the antenna provided, and this actually worked. I could watch and record. BUT I don't want to settle for a handful of wimpy channels. I want everything I get with my digital cable.

I really thought this would be easier, but I have reached new levels of frustration.

Running Windows 7 64 bit. Thanks for any input.

DRM'd WMV's in WMC

In brief, anyone here able to play Amazon VOD (Unbox) content in WMC?

Long version - I have Amazon Unbox installed on my HTPC under Win 7 x64. The video downloads are protected WMV's which play fine in Unbox, which I think is just a wrapper for WMP. And yes, they play fine in WMP too. Ultimately, I'd like to just use Unbox to download content and then access it via WMC using Media Browser. However, each attempt ends with an error about being unable to open the file. I can pretty much play anything unprotected, and I have the latest Shark007 codec pack installed and it works like a champ, from old AVI's to bluray. This seems to me to be an issue of DRM and as I understand it, if it can play in WMP, it should play in WMC. The files are in the same exact place they were downloaded to. The workaround is to start the video in WMP, then pause and switch to WMC, then start it there. It fires up w/o a hitch then. I can then close the WMP if I want and it continues in WMC until complete. If I close it, there's no restarting w/o the workaround.

I am a DRM noob. I avoid the stuff as much as possible. It's always a headache of some sort. Yeah - I know - use the Unbox player or WMP. Just seems like WMC should work here w/o issue. Anyone got a clue?

Thanks

Trying to decide on TiVo or WMC

Hello,

I have an option to get TiVo premiere with live time subscription for $500.00 which comes really close to Ceton price tag. Would you guys recommend going with tivo or or WMC?

The main thing that I am interested in is reliability. I do not want to miss a recording that i have scheduled (either season or just single one). Also, how well does WMC handle the recording conflicts, will it clips shows?
Another issue is power usage, what would drain less power?

In addition the PC that I would use as WMC will also be used for other activities (some work - excel/internet and gaming - StarCraft2). The PC is about two years old, but I think it is still fairly powerful. It has Core2Duo (E8400) @3GHz, 4GB of RAM, GeForce 8800GT, 1TB WD HardDrive and 600 Watt PSU.

Considering all of this what do you think would be better fit WMC HTPC or TiVo?

Thank you for your input.

Share Examples Of Your Windows 7 Media Center Build Process (Related Application & WMC Add In Stack)

Hi

I have built a new computer in order to run WMC. I am using a dual tv card from a slightly older computer (HP branded vixs puretv-u dual tuner 48b0) and this may be the problem however, I am looking for other people's advice before buying (and probably returning) a new tv card. The tuner seems to be recognized well in WMC. If I record one analog channel (using a time warner cable box) and try to watch a second channel (QAM also through time warner) the video and audio stutters and skips. It is unwatchable. Both channels do tune, however, neither plays well (can't watch the QAM and the recorded analog skips as well). It does not make a difference whether I am recording the QAM or the Analog. If I am not recording, both the QAM and Analog work well on their own.

The system has Windows 7 Home Professional, an i5 750 processor, Nvidia 9800GT 1GB Card (HP Branded), 4 GB of RAM, and a 750GB hard drive (7200 RPM) which I am recording to. It doesn't seem to be maxing out any of my specs while trying to record and watch at the same time. Different drivers for the card are pretty much non-existant from what I can tell.

Does anyone have any advice before I buy a new tv card?

I have a batch file setup to move new recorded shows from my computer to my server. With Vista, everything worked perfect. Now, with Windows 7, I'm having an issue.

If the recorded shows are moved 'before' they are viewed under RecordedTV, they have no thumbnails. Example would be: If a show is recorded, and I open RecordedTV to view the shows, everything is happy and each recording has a thumbnail. If my batch file moves the shows to the server, and I did not open RecordedTV first to view the shows, those new shows that were moved will not have thumbnails.

To fix this, I have to move the shows back to the computer (from the server), open RecordedTV, the thumbnails will then be 'populated', then I can move them back to the server and the thumbnails will be fine.

Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix this? My batch file runs at night, and I don't always get a chance to open RecordedTV before it runs.
