The ceton tuner is going to be delayed. They still don't even have cablelabs certification and I doubt they will start production without that! It would be nice if they gave us some sort of update on when it will actually be released.

if you're going by the cablelabs certified devices list (which is dated last August 2009) I wouldn't put too much faith in it. They'll update it when they want. You'll notice that there aren't many dates on that page and not a lot of explanations as to what the certifications mean such as "paper". I know that my JVC tv with cablecard was "self-veritfied" and never went thru cablelabs.

Since samples are showing up here and there for review, I'd put more value on it getting close to being put on sale.

I e-mailed a couple of times with someone at CableLabs about the issue you raise, and she said that they re-publish their product list whenever a new device is certified--whether it's within a day or a month of the certification date, who knows.  On the other hand, back in early February I heard from someone at Ceton that they were "getting ready for production", so I don't doubt that they've got to be pretty close to target.  Engadget is reviewing the card this weekend, and it's unlikely we'd see a review published too far from a ship date.

It's fun to speculate, and even more fun to know that soon we won't have to.

I don't put much on things like published certification lists anymore. Many years ago I was in a conference with a corporate copyright lawyer at the company where I was working and asked him what the term in the then copyright law "file in a timely manner" actually would mean.

He said that you needed to file either: 1) the day before the copyright would expire so that you could file for renewal, or 2) the day before going into court to file a lawsuit for infringement.

That would give you a leeway of about 28 years under the law at that time before filing with the LOC and sending in the form, two prints and $6.00.

That gave me a new meaning to the word "promptly" or "as soon as".

thats good news. I won't be ordering from this company though, because its likely they charge tax in my home state. I'd rather not pay $40 worth of tax...

Expected to ship May 31 though, no thanks!!! I'll just wait for it on Amazon. I have Amazon prime. I'm still willing to go up to Washington to pick up mine. I also have to make a trip to SteppIR antennas in Bellevue as well. LOL

Re: Ceton CableCard Tuner at Amazon.com

Guys, Let me ask you a question.. Why do you think all these other retailers including Amazon took the product off their sites? Because Ceton has requested they do so thats why!. I talked to one of those companies and they received an email asking for the product to be removed and that they still don't have cablelabs certification. Cablelabs moves very slow! Talk to anyone that has had to deal with them and you will here the same thing.

They had cards at CES on demo and they have cards that they are providing to people for testing and reviews but that does not mean they have a large number for inventory. They may but I tend to agree with some others that until they receive final cablelabs certification they might not make a bunch just in case Cablelabs ask for another change to be made.

It will get here when it gets here. Hopefully they get their cablelabs certification in the next couple of weeks and they can at least start shipping what they have.

The Ceton card still does not show up on any of the distribution channels either and Ceton as already told us at CES that retail sales will go through distribution and those guys will normally list the product in their inventory.

As far Zones.com charging $40 more then the announced street price? It's because he's trying to make some money on the impatient people that cant wait. The retail price is still set to be $399.00

That put its real close to the HdHomerun dual cablecard tuner. I think I might just wait for that.  I don't need 4 tuners and I really like the current Hdhomerun. Not to mention its price should be about $250.00

Not to mention the HDHR CC being able to automatically restart an SDV adapter when it isn't functioning. With Ceton, it's still getting up and walking (across the house, potentially).

Well as for the SD device, all we have is Nick's one week of testing at Cablelabs. I've got five months of testing with the ATI DCT and they try to restart the tuning adapters as well. The problem is that depends on the your headend and the TA--here it really doesn't work.

So until I actually have units to test on an extended basis under my conditions I'm not ready to say anything is better than anything else. What we have learned is that the SD will be tied to one computer because the OCUR spec doesn't allow the cablecard to float on the network. If SD went with two S-cards then you could possibly split the tuners, but the way they've currently configured it both tuners will lock to the first machine that pairs it so we don't have to worry about tuner sharing between machines with either device.

I wouldn't look for the SD device to get to market before the first of next year (you've just seen an example of the time it takes with cablelabs and every one cooperating.  It took ATI from Aug 29 to what Nov 12 to deliver on their firmware update! And that was dated May of 2009.

Sorry I havent followed the ATI adapter much... but firmware updates need CableLabs certification, too? Or was there something more significant going on in the update?

Yes firmware updates have to be passed through cablelabs as well. The 1.19 update was rather major since it both relaxed the previous DRM which locked down everything to the service provider flag system and added tuning resolver (adapater) support for switched digital video.

The interesting thing here is the timeline. Digital Keystone dated the revision May 1, 2009. The Cablelabs cerrtification list shows ATI  with a tuning adapter support firmware being ceritfied in Aug 29, 2009 and then it was rolled out in a MS update I think around Nov 12 because I waited to install Win 7 until the update was available.

Just an insight into the way Cablelabs works.
